  Star Wars Spectacular: KJ’s Experience
Part I: Prelude

By KJ

July 26, 2004

I read in the Comic-Con International 2004 program that the Star Wars Spectacular presentation on Saturday July 24 from noon to 2:00pm was endorsed by Lucasfilm. But my knowledge of the presentation stopped there. Most of the other Star Wars presentations I had attended on previous days (ex. Star Wars author/editor panel, LucasArts panel, Star Wars Hasbro panel, etc.) were in rooms that could seat, maybe, 400-500 people.

I naively assumed that this “Star Wars Spectacular” was going to be in the same size room. Wrong. Actually, the room wasn’t even a room at all. It was a hall (Hall H to be exact) that could seat about 6000 people. Big difference.

I arrived at Hall H maybe five or ten minutes early, and the hall was packed. I chuckled when a voice over the loudspeaker asked people to deactivate their lightsabers during the show so that they would not disturb other audience members. You don’t hear that everyday.

I asked several people sitting in the chairs about halfway from the front, I asked several people sitting in the chairs about halfway from the front, “Is this seat taken?” and each time I got a, “Yes it is, sorry,” in response. Well scratch that idea.

I hastily decided I better snag a seat a little more toward the back, before those seats got taken too! This isn’t too bad, I thought as I found a seat, and there were a few open seats next to me so I could reserve one for my brother (he’s also a Star Wars nut), who arrived a few minutes later.

While we were waiting for the stragglers to get seated, and for the presentation to begin, I snapped a

few pictures of the crowd, as well as a few people in costumes.

Right on cue, it seemed, the loud speaker boomed that there was to be no photography during the presentation with the exception of licensed members of the press.

I turned off my camera, satisfied with the pictures I had taken (which are displayed on the right ), and hoped that the announcement meant that the presentation was going to start soon. Indeed, the house lights dimmed a few moments later, and Star Wars Spectacular began.
